Woodwind Instruments are a great way to introduce young people to the world of music. Not only do woodwind lessons introduce them to a fascinating cultural world - it has been proven that introduction to music gives a young person an advantage in understanding math and science. Naperville Music-can provide you with a woodwind teacher that will make that introduction special.

What age should my child start lessons?

What are Woodwind Instruments?   Clarinet Flute Oboe Saxophone   Woodwind lessons will teach your child the proper position for holding the instrument. They will focus on embouchure (the way you shape your mouth while playing), sound repertoire, finger placement, and music reading. Many teachers choose the classical repertoire because it will give students the fundamentals needed to play the style of choice in the future. The theory taught to play any woodwind instrument is also very similar.

Clarinet

Clarinet is a popular instrument in school programs so your child will have the opportunity to participate in band or orchestra with their friends. The recommended age to start a child in clarinet lessons is 8 years. The lessons will teach your child the proper position for holding the instrument. They will focus on embouchure (the way you shape your mouth while playing), tone control, finger placement, and music reading. The theory taught to play the clarinet is also very similar to the saxophone and the flute. Many times young players will learn on the clarinet and then switch over to one or both of the others to broaden their musical talents.

Flute

The flute is one of the most popular beginning band instruments, which can be attributed to its simplicity and pleasing sound. This instrument is a great starting point for a child to learn music. The flute family consists of the piccolo, E flat, alto, concert or C flute and bass flutes.   The concert flute is the instrument used for beginners. To play this instrument your child must be large enough to reach the keys without straining their neck or hands.  Flute manufacturers do offer a flute with curved head joints to make it possible for a smaller child to play the instrument without difficulty. Your flute teacher may recommend a curved head joint for a small, beginner and will switch them to a straight head joint as your child progresses. As your child's musical ability with the flute develops their flute teacher may recommend they move up to a bass or alto flute.

Saxophone

Saxophones come in several different sizes.  Soprano may be either straight or curved. This instrument is difficult for beginners because the intonation (playing in tune) is more challenging than Alto or Tenor.  It is the instrument recommended for beginners.   Tenor is larger than the Alto and has a larger mouthpiece. Baritone is the largest of the Sax family.   The alto saxophone may also be curved or straight and is advisable for beginners because of its size and shape make it manageable for children. Other factors making the alto a popular first saxophone is that it is generally less expensive. The Alto Sax is most often used in school band programs and it is popular even in the professional field.

Oboe

Oboe can be one of the more challenging instruments for beginning players to learn, but it can certainly be rewarding as many college and universities are eager to offer scholarships to oboe players.  Taking private lessons offers the personal attention that is essential to mastering the nuances of this very delicate instrument. Our instructors help you achieve your clarinet goals.
